PRACTICAL LIBRARY / SWITCHING

Moving a number without the confusion

A code starts a process; it is not the whole process.

01

Identify the intended outcome

For a single number you want to keep, request a PAC by texting PAC to 65075 from the existing line. If you are switching without retaining that number, the STAC route uses 75075. Multi-line situations need the provider’s online or telephone process.

02

Read the response

The code lasts 30 days. Check the switching information for early exit consequences, credit and other obligations before passing it on. Requesting a code does not, by itself, finish the transfer or settle a device agreement.

03

Use the receiving provider

Submit the code through the new provider’s official channel. Ofcom says the transfer must be completed within one working day. Keep the old SIM available until the process is confirmed, and avoid an unnecessary separate cancellation that risks the number.

04

Check after the move

Test incoming calls, outgoing calls, texts and data. Ask the previous provider about the final bill or remaining credit. If the switch is delayed, record the dates and use the provider’s resolution process. An internal plan change may follow a different route from switching providers.

Keep the next step official

General information cannot confirm personal account conditions. Read your provider’s current documents and use its official channels before making a change.

Your next step remains your decision.
